Wang Yanfang established a donation run shelter for stray dogs after she witnessed the cruelty inflicted upon dogs in her province and killing of 37,000 stray dogs by the authorities due to a fear of rabies breakdown.

The shelter grew large in number more than she had anticipated with more entries to the shelter every day due to the “One Dog Rule” introduced in China. She knew that if she didn’t take those human companions in her shelter, a very cruel fate awaited them outside.

She enlisted the voluntary help of four elderly women who have been working every day at the shelter since 2009. The women treat all the dogs in their shelter as their babies and share that they cannot ever think of losing them. This is in stark contrast to the behavior meted out to dogs in general in the country where thousands of dogs are slaughtered in the name of a festival.

The five women care for and groom all the dogs at the shelter and wake up every morning at four to prepare 400 kilograms of dog food. The job comes with its own set of risks as not all the residents of the shelter are friendly. This has led to many bruises, cuts, and bites but the ladies march on with sheer dedication to serving these dogs. There are only two words for these selfless animal lovers: Hats Off!
