Sorry, You Cannot Bring your Pet into India! - Says Govt. of India

You are all set to come back to India with your family and your pet dog after a stay of 12 months in Dubai.
YOU CAN COME BACK… BUT, YOUR PET CANNOT!
Because, one fine morning, the Ministry of Finance, Department of Revenue, Central Board of Excise & Customs, Government of India woke up and came up with a circular dated 08/04/2013 stating that
“It has been decided to allow import of two pet animals as baggage ONLY to persons transferring their residence to India after two years of continuous stay abroad.” This rule came into effect on 15/04/2013.
So what happens if you have stayed abroad for only 12 months or you are an expat with a job deputation to India? Definitely, a foreigner cannot be expected to shift his or her residence permanently into India.
So, India will not allow your pet’s entry! This pet we are talking about is a FAMILY MEMBER not just a dog or a cat!
Surprised? Shocked? Unbelievable? – But it is true, India’s has become the 1
st country in the world to ban bringing of the domestic pets into the country.
Hundreds and thousands of pet owners who have move abroad, or gone on a holiday, or a foreigner who wants to come with his pet to India won’t be able to do it, thanks to latest notification [dated 08/04/2013 applicable from 15/04/2013] on Baggage rules. View the notification here
All other people, please say Good Bye to your pets, or put them down if you ever want to come back to India! At least that is what the Government of India expects you to do.
True the circular was issued to curb illegal trade of Pedigree Pups by unscrupulous Breeders and Pet traders, but no thought is given to GENUINE PET OWNERS who have taken the pets abroad and now want to come back to India.
1. If you are an EXPAT with a work visa in a multinational company in India and own a pet dog or a cat and you cannot bring your pet into India. WILL YOU TAKE UP THE JOB CONTRACT? If you have already accepted the work contract and completed your formalities to come to India with your family and your pet … are you willing to abandon your pet back in your home country?
2. If you went abroad with your family and your pet on a work contract last year and for whatever reason your work contract is terminated and you have cancelled your Visa … are you willing to leave your pet behind! A pet that has given the best years of his life to you!
Like this, there must be many of us genuine pet owners who are caught in this dilemma.
I just cannot imagine my life without my JOEY, what about you?
