Which breed to buy?

When you agree with yourself to star keeping a dog major question is which breed of dog to keep?

If you are decided already then you must have decided the breed choice right in your childhood. However sometimes we need to give away the liking and decide the breed depending upon various variables. For example: I like GSDs' (Alsatians), However now when I am living in an apartment that too in high rise, I may not keep a large and active breed like GSD, Great Dane, Doberman etc. I would rather choose to keep a medium or small breed such as Cocker Spaniel or Lhasa Apso.

Choosing a breed also depends on your life style. If you are working and have not many people in the house to take care of the dog you may not like to keep a high maintenance dog such as Lhasa Apso. Lhasa's need lot of grooming regularly. Many other long and double coat dogs need same type of care.

While choosing a breed you should also know that each breed is behaviorally different than another.  For example, Labrador Retrievers are behaviorally different than the Alsatians. Based on the behavioral traits the dogs are classified under different groups. Labs are gundogs and Alsatians are working dogs. Gundogs and working dogs skills are fundamentally different. Labs are known to be retrieving dogs; when you go out for bird hunt they fetch the target after shoot, they should not bark, because if they bark the target will fly away. They have high level of retrieving capabilities and highly sensitive nose. These qualities make them easy to be trained in sniffing. On the other hand German Shepherd Dogs (GSD), also called Alsatians, have skill set of a shepherd, shepherds know their flock well and have high sense of possession and guarding. They love getting orders from the master and are said to be master dogs.

If you are a globetrotter or cannot spend much time with your dogs it is recommended to keep 2 dogs; so that they can have company. Also you will need to have couple of dog boarding address in your city handy.

I’ll be writing more about dog breed behaviors … so keep reading!
