A wide variety of Dog Toys to pamper your Pooch:

07 Apr 2013 | by | Posted in: Wellness

Remember how excited we used to be whenever we got a new toy! The same goes for your best friend ---your darling pooch. Now dogs cannot essentially play carrom..not at least the way we play! That however does not restrict them to just balls..albeit that would be their all time favorite.

Dog toys come in many varieties, including dog bones, puppy toys, balls, tug toys, training aids, squeaky toys, discs and frisbees, plush toys, and sticks.

We have to remember that dogs do not only need toys to keep them happy but these toys serve multiple purposes. Puppies, for instance, need toys they can chew on when they are teething because their gums and jaws become very sore and chewing on things provides them relief. Also it provides incentive to exercise and that is always important to keep your dog healthy.

Toys also stimulate dogs' minds, discourage problem behavior resulting from boredom and excess energy, and promote dental health. So those shoes which attract his attention and are chewed up,will be spared if you get him a toy!

There are a wide variety of dog toys on the market that are designed for different purposes and depending on the dog's characteristics such as size, activity level, chewing habits, and play style.

Balls: This one is always going to be the favorite both with the dogs and their masters. The very basic obedience training starts with giving him a ball to fetch and teaching him to return it to you.Balls come in different colors and sizes and also a variety of textures. You can choose according the age and size of your dog.The basic check would be that the dog should be able to hold it comfortably in his mouth.

Sticks: Dogs have a habit of chewing on sticks and gnawing at the barks of trees. You can ensure that they do not pick up dirty stuff from just anywhere by giving him a personal stick.Sticks can also be thrown for the dog to retrieve. This can also be a training for dogs and a good exercise.

Frisbees: These require you to play with him. They can be used as entertainment as well as a thing to fetch. They are specially useful when you are out with your family, having a picnic maybe and you want him to be distracted. These toys can keep him busy such that he does not wander off.

Tug-toys; If you have more than one pet dog a tug toy is a good way of keeping them busy with each other and keeping a fight at bay. These toys require the dog to use his strength to keep the toy with him and is useful in holding their attention.

Chew Toys: Latex and rubber dog toys are great for dog entertainment. With these toys, dogs that are aggressive chewers have a safe way to satisfy their biting instincts. These toys also help keep dogs' gums and teeth clean and healthy. In general, hard rubber bones and other latex dog toys help improve dogs' overall oral hygiene. These are very important in case of puppies. Once they get used to a chew toy they are very less likely to destroy things around them.

Kong is popular line of dog toys and cat toys introduced in 1976. Made of rubber, they are hollow in the middle, and can be stuffed with treats or frozen to provide long-lasting distraction for anxious or high-energy dogs. They come in four rubber types; red for average chewers, pink or blue for puppies, purple for seniors, and black for tough chewers.

Bones: A dog bone is either a real or toy bone that makes a good dog toy. Some dogs like to bury bones in the yard, so they can dig them up and chew on them later. Other dogs like to carry bones around with them. Dog bones also help getting plaque off of the dog's teeth. They can also be used as treats, you can buy edible toy-bones.

Dog Soft ToysA dog may also love to have a soft toy of his own.He may like to cuddle up next to it and carry with to his bed at night. You can buy him any soft toy, just keep in mind that it had no small detachable part that your pet may swallow.

Safety: Dog toys are not safe if small pieces can be chewed or pulled off as these could be swallowed by the dog. The toy should also be adequate for the dog, taking into consideration their size and activity levels. When choosing a dog toy, it is important that pet owners choose those made with non-toxic materials. Dog owners should avoid giving their dogs objects with small parts that could be chewed off and ingested (such as cooked chicken bones).

You can combine different toys and create a new one for your pet. Some toys can be combined by the dog owner to create new toys for dogs to play with. Whereas a hard ball is not well-suited for chewing, and a plush toy is difficult to throw, wrapping the ball in a plush exterior creates a toy that can be thrown and chewed on. Such toys may provide more entertainment value for dogs and their owners.Plus it will ensure that your dog is not bored with the safe toys to play with.

So happy play time!!!!!
